Pre-event interviews

“I would say that one of the most rewarding aspects of compliance is its role in upholding an organization’s most valuable asset: trust and credibility. In a world that is increasingly complex and where change is constant, the compliance function must understand the evolving landscape, the organization’s position within it, and the associated compliance risks. This requires making informed judgment calls to protect the organization. Navigating that complex landscape and ensuring organizational safety and security, is exciting to me. As a compliance function, you can be the tail that moves the head.”
"Within the compliance function, we have the compliance professionals, the craftsmen. But it is much more than only understanding the different compliance themes. Our skills and expertise go beyond these; we have diverse teams, including different backgrounds, also focusing on behavior and root causes. In addition, we of course have IT experts and data analysts. We work together with our colleagues in digital, with model validators in risk. So, the more knowledge of tech, the better we can jointly work together on all requirements around data lineage, data processing and analyses."
“I am excited about the line-up of speakers at the event, I think there is a lot of excellence on board, and they represent a large part of the financial sector, offering diverse perspectives. It is also valuable that some speakers will include clients from other sectors, providing insight into their experiences and the challenges they face with financial institutions. Besides this, I look forward to meeting people who have the same focus, learning from each other and connecting as one big community.”
“We see some trends coming up, both in the Netherlands and abroad. One of them is closely related to the complexity of regulations, but also the complexity of structures within institutions to manage risks and can be summarized as 'the need for standardization’. We notice that incredibly complex structures are being set up within institutions to comply and report. To give an example surrounding the theme of AML and CTF regulation (which often comes up). Structures are set up to identify and manage risk, create transparency and report on it effectively. But when new regulations, for example sustainability, come in, are we then going to create similar new structures? And the following regulations after that? Of course, all institutions have their own Compliance frameworks and tooling and have the goal to integrate as much as possible, but how they are used is often slightly different because regulations are different, and the regulator is also often slightly different. To make it even more complex you also have an international context that institutions are often exposed to and eventually you end up with a structure where that is not efficient and (even worse) not effective. Standardization within Compliance is therefore no longer an “nice to have”, but a necessity to manage Compliance effectively and efficiently.”
“What I probably shouldn’t say, but will anyway, is this: Don’t start your career in compliance. Begin in the business side instead—get hands-on experience with customers and processes. Once you’ve done that, then move into compliance. Alternatively, start in compliance and take an assignment in the business. I think it is extremely important to understand how a bank operates and how customers think, because it will make your compliance work much more meaningful and relevant. On the other hand, if you do start in compliance, do not get too fixated on just the rules and regulations. Compliance is about more than just following the law; it is about interpretation, common sense, integrity, and ethical decision-making. While technical expertise is important, always ask yourself, “Is this really what we want to do?” Keeping this broader perspective in mind is crucial for any compliance officer.”

Uniting the financial sector by discussing pressing topics and enhancing cooperation. That’s what we love to do at Leaders in Finance. By listening, learning, and connecting with others, we accelerate the sharing of ideas, thus powering (upcoming) leaders and organizations to shape the future of financial services.

Each part of the Leaders in Finance Group – Podcasts, Events, Lunches, Academy – has its unique approach. Want to explore how we can benefit your organizational goals? We’re happy to meet and discuss opportunities.
